Approaching Casa Topazio you'll know you've arrived when you get to a fence line of multicolored bougainvilleas leading to the arched entrada of Casa Topacio .Passing through the archway , you'll no doubt notice the imposing Higuera , a wild fig tree , supporting enormous palapa fronds of the palm that it grew from as many as 150 years ago . Looking forward , the three story Casa Topazio , painted a brilliant yellow , stands before you . You'll see the sheltered outdoor staircase leading to the second floor, making Casa Topazio ideal as a single family home, with possibly two cooks in the family , or as a rental , the owner living in one part and renting the other , or renting both parts.
The porch for the staircase is shared with the first floor entry. Enjoying your morning coffee on this porch , you might look out into the tall brick walled courtyard , up to the huge jackfruit hanging from the tree , or down onto the tiered rock jungle garden descending to the base of the Higuera and Palm trees, or you might prefer the private patio , accessible through the set of arched French doors from the kitchen area of the first floor dwelling . This also looks out on the junglesque environment , as do all the windows of the house . Also present on this almost double sized property is a plethora of other trees : Tamarindo , Almendra , Bamboo , Guayaba , Neem , Jack Fruit , Moringas , Capulins , Primaveras, and Palms .
Returning inside through the other set of French doors, you'll find a spacious , well lit bedroom , graced additionally with a small cathedral window , protected by vine like ironwork . Circling back into the living room gives access to the bathroom , painted brilliant turquoise , with parota wood cabinet doors, as are all the doors of the casa . Herein the traditional Mexican shower is of white and blue tilework , detailed with design azulejos ; an incentive to sing in the shower !
Not to be overlooked at the first floor level but with an outside entry under the staircase , is the lavandaria . Its large , lockable iron door is a design artwork featuring exotic shapes from the "naturaleza" , all around ...
Once up the turquoise studded stairs , you'll enter the studio space , comfortably large enough to house a kingsized bed and a day bed , as well as a few comfortable chairs. Also on the front wall of this space is the kitchen area , looking out and down upon the natural landscape . Here , in the second level is a richly painted orange bathroom , appointed with white and apple green tiles , and also detailed with design tiles . Stepping out another door , the private patio of the second floor awaits you . With plenty of relaxation area , and partially sheltered for a breakfast table , it supports a circular staircase leading up to the private open air terrace above . Playfully treated as a "Glam Camp" style environment , this third floor terrace also has all the bathroom facilities , given privacy by hanging curtains and petates , as well as dimmable lighting , as does the entire house , allowing this terrace in the trees to take on a magical , even romantic quality at night. You'd find that some of your guests would want only to stay here! As well as being a mesmeriaing space at night , here , you can relax and watch all the iguanas , chachalacas , woodpeckers, and palomas that are in the trees throughout the day !
Coming back down to the first floor porch , still outside , you might want to see the bodega , which is a locking , shelved storage area. It also houses the pump, pressure tank, and hot water heater . The bodega is isolated , the one room of the house built on the low level of the land . In the ground in front of it is a 5000 liter water tank, supplying the water to be pumped to all parts of the house , including the very top shower and bathroom facilities . Should there be no electricity to the house for any reason , there is a sufficient water tank on the top terrace , which fills every morning , offering gravity flow to the entire house .
Leading down to the bodega , there is a curving staircase of mortared rock and brick , designed to organically fit into the undulating natural shapes of the environment . There, also in front of the bodega and tank is a thick , curving mortared rock wall designed to protect the bodega and its contents from the possibility of flood waters in the summertime from the nearby , otherwise dry streambed. It also creates still another aesthetically pleasing space to spend time .
Casa Topazio is in a pleasant , somewhat quiet neighborhood , with only four flat city walking blocks to the south end of the beach.
